The Sheep Farming Museum

The Sheep Farming Museum is a museum and a cultural center, located in Strandir near Hólmavík. “Why is there a whole museum dedicated to sheep farming?” - one might ask. First of all, we have a lot of sheep’s! If you’re visiting in summertime, you can be sure of seeing them roaming around. Be careful if you are doing a self-drive trip, the sheep’s like to cross the road.

All aspects of sheep farming are and have been intertwined with the everyday life and environment of the people in Strandir. At the Sheep Farm Museum, you will find an entertaining and informative exhibition about the life & history of the area and of course everything about the Icelandic sheep. Visitors experience the exhibition through all their senses. It offers a wide range of entertainment suitable for all age groups. Kids have their dedicated space furnished with toys and coloring books for their enjoyment, allowing adults to explore the exhibition at their own pace. Additionally, the museum features a small science room equipped with microscopes for visitors to examine various objects in detail.

Additionally, there is an outdoor exhibition walking trail. For those interested in outdoor activities and hiking, the exhibition trail is connected to a longer walking trail (5 km) with signs providing historical and nature information.

The museum shop offers handicrafts and souvenirs, and there's a cozy café named Kaffi Kind (Café Sheep) with a unique view of Steingrímsfjörður (Steingrimsfjord). They serve delicious local foods and homemade pastries. Kaffi Kind also offers incredibly good ice cream straight from the farm Erpsstaðir in Dala County. Don't miss it!
