Traveling in Winter to the Westfjords
The Westfjords welcome travelers mostly in the summer as well as spring and autumn. That does not mean it’s impossible to travel here during winter months. You can catch a flight to Ísafjörður and Bíldudalur. You can also drive to the Westfjords or combine driving with a ferry. That being said it may not be for everyone to drive in Iceland in Icelandic winter. It’s only recommended for drivers experienced in driving in winter conditions. The weather is highly unpredictable, with conditions changing rapidly (sometimes every hour), and roads are often icy or snow-covered. For this reason, it's crucial to check weather forecasts and road conditions regularly. Before hitting the road, make sure to consult the Icelandic traffic website for the latest updates on the road conditions: Icelandic Traffic.
Below is a map of the route with information on how frequently the roads are cleared during winter, some are cleared daily while others are cleared a couple of times a week, or even less. When planning your trip, it is necessary to take snow clearing into account, but also to look into the weather forecast for the upcoming days, snow conditions in each region and current road conditions.
Snow and road conditions can vary greatly from the south part to the north part of the Westfjords Way, it is therefore important to stay up to date on all conditions while driving during winter.
