How to get to the Westfjords

The Westfjords of Iceland are a unique and less-traveled destination, known for the stunning landscapes and quaint villages. If you're planning a visit, it’s essential to know how to get here. Here we walk you through the steps for reaching the Westfjords, detailing different routes available whether you choose to drive or fly

Step 1: Getting to Iceland

Before you even think about the Westfjords, you’ll need to arrive in Iceland. Most international flights land at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), located about 45 minutes from the capital, Reykjavík. Major airlines like Icelandair and Play offer flights from North America and Europe.

Once you land in Keflavík, you’ll have a few options to get to Reykjavík, either by rental car, shuttle bus, or taxi. Most travelers opt for renting a car, which will give you flexibility for the trip ahead.

Step 2: Choosing Your Route to the Westfjords

There are two main ways to reach the Westfjords: by driving or by flying. Both offer different experiences, depending on how much time you have and your sense of adventure.

Option A: Driving from Reykjavík

Driving is the most popular way to reach the Westfjords, as it allows you to explore at your own pace and enjoy the stunning scenery along the way. From Reykjavík, the journey to the Westfjords is about 4-6 hours, depending on where you’re headed in the region.

  • Start by following Iceland’s famous Ring Road (Route 1) heading north. It will take you approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to get to the start of the Westfjords way, simply turn left on to route no. 60 and once you have crossed Brattabrekka your first mountain pass, your journey around to the Westfjords has officially begun.
  • You could also drive to the town of Stykkishólmur and take the Baldur Ferry to Brjánslækur (Southern part of the Westfjords). The ferry ride takes about 2.5 hours, offering stunning views of the fjords and small islands along the way. If you have the time, make a stop at the Flatey Island, a quaint and charming island with old cottages and lots of birdlife

Option B: Fly from Reykjavík

If you prefer not to drive, you can book a flight from Reykjavík Domestic Airport to three different destinations in the Westfjords. Not to be confused with Keflavík International Airport (KEF), where international flights land.

You have the option to fly to Ísafjörður, the largest town in the region with Icelandair. You can fly to Bíldudalur in the southern fjords with Norlandair. Norlandair also offer flighs to Gjögur (Strandir area) two times a week.

The flight itself is a treat, as you’ll be soaring over the stunning landscapes of Iceland. On clear days, the aerial views  are breathtaking and provide a unique perspective on Iceland’s natural beauty.

In Ísafjörður and Bíldudalur, you can easily rent a car to begin your adventure. However, car rentals are not available in Gjögur.

By refining your travel plan and choosing your route, you're now ready for an unforgettable journey to one of Iceland’s most stunning regions! Whether you decide to drive through the vast, wild landscapes or take a quick flight with jaw-dropping views, the Westfjords will not disappoint.
