„My name is Mariia Drachuk. I am a visual artist based in Trondheim, Norway. I received my MFA in 2018 from KiT (Art Academy in Trondheim). My medium is non-figurative oil painting. In my paintings, I use layers as a method to build up and set in focus the depth and dynamics of colour and to emphasize the versatility of the oil paint. I am interested in the material side of the painting medium, rather than the narrative behind the picture. The starting point in my practice is a will to showcase the canvas filled with movement, and where all the movements are in a vibrant dialog with each other.
My interest in the movement and materiality of the paint comes and is inspired by, the ideas of New Materialism. New materialism is a theory that explores relations between human and non-human agents, their connections, and relations. My ambition is to create paintings that are perceived as organic in motive, but without having any obvious and straightforwardly recognizable biological shapes and forms.
My canvases are in a relatively large scale as this gives me a direct bodily connection to the canvas. During my residency stay at ArtsIceland I have been working on trying out a method new to my practice - producing sketches for the eventual works in oil back home in my studio in Trondheim.‘‘
