Hólmavík - www.holmavik.is/info- is a vibrant, pleasant town of 400 people situated in Steingrímsfjörður fjord in Strandir alongside Route 61, just 270 km from Reykjavík. Inhabitants in the countryside surrounding Hólmavík live mostly on sheep farming, while economic activity in town revolves around the fisheries and services. It is often said that the people of Strandir are vibrant and well connected with nature, words that indeed are true.
People of Strandir know a bit more about witchcraft and sorcery than others, and to underscore that claim, the Museum of Sorcery & Witchcraft, which takes one on a tour into the mystical world of the supernatural, is to be found in Hólmavík. The history of witch-hunting in 17th century Iceland is presented at the exhibition as well as various aspects of magic from more recent sources.
Hólmavík has much to offer to visitors: natural beauty, peace and quiet, enjoyable walking trails, diverse cultural activities, a new swimming pool, beautiful handcrafts, a golf course, a good restaurant and bar, an exciting Witchcraft & Sorcery Exhibition, previously mentioned and a Tourist Information Centre. The main service centre for the whole Strandir region is in Hólmavík, including a health clinic, banks, shops, garage, guesthouses, etc.
Hólmavík is a paradise for families and nature lovers, located by the sea under beautiful buttes named Kálfanesborgir. These buttes, which protect the town, are popular among hikers, in particular because of the beautiful views of the surrounding area from their peaks.
